The Mystery Of The Walking Dead Ghost Variant Cover
Some retailers have them in stock. Some don't. This is the official line;
"A mysterious figure known as the Ghost has invited a small group of retailers to sell his Ghost Variant comics. No one knows who the Ghost is, where the comics are coming from, or what the next Ghost Variant will be. But everyone should be on the watch for The Ghost."
Variant comics are big business in comics these days. Not only are they being used to incentivize retailers to order large copies of the normal comic, but individual retailers in groups are getting their own variant covers commissioned and printed, to stay in control of the whole situation. The Walking Dead #101 Ghost Variant is just one of these.
How were these shops selected? The stores identified so far are listed below… one thing that links most of them is membership of the retailer pressure group, especially being on the board of ComicsPRO, but this is not a ComicsPRO variant. One retailer, Ben Trujillo of StarClipper was insistent to me that it wasn't a ComcisPRO variant, as he has copies but is not a member.
Of course, he used to be on the board of ComicsPRO.
However, as the variant was not offered to all members, and both they and non-members are calling foul on the availability of this Michonne-starring variant cover, citing cliques and favoritism and suggesting that the whole plan was set up by board members and their close pals at the Dallas ComicsPRO meeting, as they launched their Facebook site around the same time.
I'm sure the truth will out sometime, but for now they are enjoying the mystery. I'm told that the Ghost variant cover has a print run of 4000-5000. And while one store is selling them as Buy It Now for $25 without takers, while another has 15 bids up to $100.
Expect more Ghost variants for other comics, from the same retailers soon… why not get in touch and nab your copy?
