Things To Do In Leamington Spa This Weekend If You Like Comics
By Olly MacNamee
Setting out its stall for a second year, and with a bigger crowd suggested from strong ticket sales, Dan Maillier and company return to the rural retreat of Leamington Spa with their independent comic con that welcomes returning publishers such as T Pub and London Horror Comics as well as top guest Dave Lloyd (V for Vendetta, of course) into their domain.
Building from the success of last year's show, Leamington Comic Con has scheduled a rather grand day out, considering it's a one-day event. With the cosplay competition moved closer to lunchtime, it allows the afternoon to focus on panels and on comics. These will involve yours truly on moderation duties meeting and greeting the aforementioned David Lloyd, along with David Leach and Neil McClements, who will be talking about Aces Weekly, a digital anthology title exclusive to the internet showcasing an array of stories, styles and sensibilities from across the globe. Following that will be the Transformers panel with artists Simon Furman and Andrew Wildman. Then, indie creators, Mike Garley, Josh Sherwell and Mike Stock talk about their comic, Kill Screen, with issue 4 debuting at the con. And a Small Press panel rounds off the afternoon.
As well as the launch of Kill Screen No.4 at the con, there will a few other launches from local indie creators too. Rees Finley will be sporting issue 2 of High Priestess, while Fly Comics debuts Timeworn Tales. There will also be the likes of Time Bomb Comics, London Horror Comics and T Pub sporting a varied and eclectic set of titles for your reading enjoyment.
And not forgetting the next generation of readers, the kids, Leamington Comic Con will have a Kids' Zone set up with balloon modeling, drawing and a sweet shop. Add in the cosplayers I mentioned earlier, and the genteel surroundings of Leamington Spa and you have all the making of a great day out.
I think that's about it.
