Viz Media Presents: Sailor Moon At NYCC '15

By Ale Bodden

As a major Moonie, this was one of the panels I was looking forward to the most (right next to Firefly), imagine how it was to wait for Sunday to be able to hear more exciting news about our favorite magical girl anime: Sailor Moon and its most recent version Sailor Moon Crystal. The panel was hosted by Viz Media's Senior Manager of Animation Marketing, Charlene Ingram—or our favorite sailor scout: Sailor Char. It was also being streamed via Periscope.

I must say—panels at NYCC are becoming the same as SDCC. One has to camp way ahead of time in order to make it to the panels you do want to see. Thankfully I did luck out and most panels/screenings I had to sit through were pretty interesting.

But back to topic. The panel kicked off with a video filled with a year worth of memories of Sailor Moon presence and events at different conventions. It was very sweet and hit right in the feels. I love knowing I am not the only one who is still obsessed with one of the first anime/manga I saw and read—it has been one of the biggest influences in my life and work so far (side to side with Ranma ½, Card Captor Sakura, and DBZ). I loved seeing fans rejoice to the same show that brings me so much happiness and nostalgia. With so much cheering and fangirling/fanboying going on it felt as if a real-life Sailor Moon and her scouts were about to put on a show… and they did! Sailor Moon was there accompanied by her inner scouts: Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Venus, Sailor Jupiter, and joining them we also had Chibi-Usa and Sailor Pluto. I died of happiness.

The scouts went to every member of the audience giving away tiny convention exclusive pins and posters, which shall forever remain in a safe place where no one can get to.

Ingram went over some special announcements. First was for Sailor Moon S, the third season of our favorite, classic Sailor Moon. She announced the different actors who will be voicing the dubs for some characters: Professor Tomoe will be played by Keith Silverstein, who also plays Usagi's dad, Kenji Tsukino. Evil Kaolinite will be played by Tara Platt, who also voices Usagi's mom, Ikuko Tsukino. Ingram also announced who will be playing the outer senshi and some of our favorite villains, the Witches 5.

Outer Senshi:

  • Haruka Tenoh/Sailor Uranus: Erica Mendez
  • Michiru Kaioh/Sailor Neptune: Lauren Landa
  • Hotaru Tomoe/Sailor Saturn: Christine M. Cabanos
  • Setsuna Meioh/Sailor Pluto: Veronica Taylor (this made my day, she's my favorite!)

Witches 5:

  • Eudial: Erin Fitzgerald
  • Mimete: Kira Buckland
  • Tellu: Laura Post
  • Viluy: Cricket Brown
  • Cyprine and Ptitol: Johanna Luis

Ingram also announced that the new Sailor Moon Crystal dub will be voiced by the same cast of actors who voiced the classic Sailor Moon version. The English dub version will be release in November of this year in its final Blu-Ray quality.
