The Washington DC Comic Store That Wants A Liquor License

The Washington Business Journal reports on local store Fantom Comics battle to get a liquor license for the comic shop. Finding himself ponying up $300 a time whenever they had a launch party or evening event where beer might be on tap, owners Matt Klokel and Dave Bishop are seeking a permanent tavern license to serve wine, beer and spirits at a much more reasonable $1,000 for three years.

However they aren't turning the comic store into a bar as well, it will still be event-only and drinks served from the counter along with the comics. And while such events may increase current events and alcohol sales only bring in 2% and will still remain under 10% but the license would also let them buy alcohol at wholesale prices.

Klokel told the Journal "We really moved beyond just selling books… We're selling the staff. We're friends with customers. We're selling the community." And, hopefully, drinking buddies.

He is also planning to use the license as a test case, to see whether a comic shop/bar combination could work in a different location. The only issue at hand is that comics and liquid to have a tenacious history…
