What Happens When A Superhero Tries To Overthrow A Country? (JLA And Amazing Spider-Man Spoilers)

It's a long time since superheroes felt comfortable taking down countries. Captain America punching out Hitler probably started it, but the Fantastic Four would try to depose Doctor Doom of Latveria every now and then too. It went out of fashion for a bit, while comic books about superheroes (rather than superhero comics in themselves) like Watchmen, Marvelman, Squadron Supreme and The Authority saw superheroes happier to intervene in world politics by taking down a government or two.

Maybe, with the current state of the world, it's back in vogue? We have two very high profile examples today, in Justice League Of America and Amazing Spider-Man.

The first is more about trying to restore the balance, I guess, with Batman putting a team together to depose Lord Havok as president of Kravia, and nearby annexed countries. And leaving in the hands of another demagogue, who is at least smaller, female, and a little bit nicer than Havok. And seems to be the new populist choice.

Because that always works. Has no one read Hunger Games? This is another example of "picking favourites" and for all nthe good intentions, probably has "failed state" written all over it.

While over in Amazing Spider-Man #26, things may be a little less peachy. With Spider-Man getting leant on by Silver Sable to help her take down a Symkaria that has been taken over and enslaved by Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin.

Which sees a full blown invasion of Symkaria by Parker Industries.

So will they be welcomed with such enthusiasm as the Justice League Of America? With Doctor Octopus of Hydra as a snitch?

image-36 Not so much, no…

Spider-Man has been threatening a kind of reset, taking away the power base the character currently enjoys. Could this – and Secret Empire – be what takes it away?

Amazing Spider-Man #26 by Dan Slott and Stuart Immonen and Justice League Of America #4 by Steve Orlando, Ivan Reis and Joe Prado are published today. Secret Empire is coming…
