Wynd #1 is Officially Boom's Biggest Creator-Owned Comic Launch Ever

Last year, Boom Studios set a record for their largest creator-owned launch ever in July with Dr. Kieron Gillen & Dan Mora's Once & Future #1, which had orders of over 31,000 copies without any variants, only to have that record shattered soon after by James Tynion IV & Werther Dell'Edera's Something is Killing The Children #1, which sold 33,822 copies of its first printing to retailers. Both series quickly joined Boom's illustrious 50K Club after their multiple printings, which continued all the way into 2020 to meet reader demand..

However, Image Co-Founder Erik Larsen, dismissed Boom's success – "They don't have the books or the talent" (despite the two companies sharing so major names like Gillen). It's something he reignited again in February, this time with Boom founder Ross Richie regarding Boom's meteoric rise in the direct market. Well, it looks like that Big Tynion Energy has struck again for Boom, as I'm hearing the surprise launch of Wynd #1 from JT4 and Michael Dialynas that was already hot with speculators – has proven to be a hit with retailers as well to the tune of 38,675 advance orders as of yesterday's FOC.

That's still about half of what an Image Comics launch like Killadelphia and Undiscovered Country gets, but still.

This would make it the biggest creator-owned series launch in Boom's history ever, at a time when comic shops are ordering more conservatively and not all states in America are even allowing stores to open up again – meaning the demand for this series could be even bigger once readers in places like New York and California (and major non-US markets like London) are able to visit their comic shops for copies of Wynd. And that means a lot of much-needed money for comic shops when these copies likely sell through quickly next month.

We know that Wynd was planned as a three graphic novel series, so don't be surprised if there's some chatter at Boom about further serialization, along with likely a new printing or two of Wynd #1 as it powers its way into their 50K Club. I'd also expect to hear about other publishers following Boom's lead and dropping surprise launches of their own to see if they can replicate the same success.

Wynd #1 is available in comic shops on Wednesday, June 17th but at this rate, it may be only available if you pre-ordered or call your local comic shop today to reserve their last few copies before the speculators descend.
