Peach Momoko Wynd #1 Variant Selling For $179 Before FOC

Oh come on this is ridiculous. Look, Bleeding Cool is happy to report on the changing market for comics, including collectible comics and comics hyped up for speculative reasons. Often they are based on the actual quality of the comic, which we have generally seen as an actually welcome thing. Image, Dark Horse, IDW, Scout, and Boom, for example, have benefitted from unexpectedly positive reception to creator-owned titles. But sometimes it goes just a little too far and into full-blown tulip territory.

Boom Studios recently made a surprise announcement that James Tynion IV & Michael Dialynas' Wynd OGN would be serialised instead with #1 would arrive in stores on June 17, five months ahead of its planned on-sale…as we told you first.

Boom's plan was to capitalize on the excitement for JT4's two biggest releases of his career – Batman #92 and Something is Killing The Children Vol.1 – both on June 10. Well, it seems to have worked – as a CGC Graded 9.8 copy of the Wynd #1 Peach Momoko variant, from one of the hottest cover artists right now, has just sold in advance of publication for $179. That's a big number for a book that FOCs today – but let's not forget that raw copies have sold just under $60. after starting the week at $39.95.

Now that is for a 1:25 tiered variant copy, which means that retailers have to order 25 copies to order just one of these. But if a retailer can sell just one copy of the variant, in advance, for enough money to pay for ordering all 26 copies – they are basically getting Wynd #1 for free.

But why is Wynd #1 selling so high before it FOCs? Well, the series is already heating up with some of the most influential speculators like Simpleman's Comics, so comic shops are already expected to get a lot of calls about the variant covers and buying multiple copies of Wynd #1. But let's not also forget that retailers are seeing big interest in original series launches from Boom now that the comics market is back open again, with Faithless II #1 jumping 25% from its pre-Covid FOC to its more recent one. And retailers know there's no writer hotter in comics right now than JT4, so a new issue #1 is exactly what they – and their customers – want right now.

The good news is you still have time to pre-order your copies today before FOC closes at Diamond…but will retailers order enough? Or will Boom's 13-month streak of immediate sell-outs on all their new launches continue, with Wynd #1 becoming as hot as Once & Future #1, which now sells for up to $200? Wynd #1 FOCs today and is in comic shops on Wednesday, June 17th. It's a peach.
