James Gunn: Love To Work With Robbie Again, As Harley Or Someone Else

James Gunn confirmed that he hasn't spoken to Margot Robbie about Harley Quinn in a while but would love to work with her again as Harley or someone else.

Article Summary

  • James Gunn expresses eagerness to work with Margot Robbie again, in DC or elsewhere.
  • Robbie isn't rushing to reprise her Harley Quinn, open to other actresses taking on the role.
  • Joker: Folie à Deux to feature Lady Gaga as Harley, drawing inevitable comparisons.
  • More Harley Quinn to come with Joker musical film and animated series despite casting shifts.

The DC Universe is officially in its transition period now that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is officially sinking at the box office and is destined to be forgotten to the sands of times like 75% of the other DC releases of 2023. People have been asking what actors or versions of characters would be making appearances in the new DC Universe from the moment James Gunn and Peter Safran announced that there would be essentially a reboot. While there were plenty of misses in the previous era of the DC Universe, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn was not one of them. Robbie is heading into 2024 after Barbie lit the world on fire and could likely do whatever she wanted. However, she isn't entirely keen to return to Harley right now. In a recent interview that once again tried to drum up some drama between Robbie and Lady Gaga because, apparently, two women can't play the same character without drama, Robbie explained, "I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters." She continued that the plan was never for her to be the only one to play the character, elaborating, "That was always the dream for her. Harley's so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else's hands, and it's like, "What are they going to do with her?" The options are endless."

A person involved with DC made some comments about DC, so everyone ran to Gunn's Threads account to see if he had anything to say about Robbie and her lack of plans to return to the DC Universe. "I haven't talked to Margot about Harley for a long time," Gunn wrote on Threads. "But I'd love to work with her again as Harley or someone else. There are no plans at this time for anyone else to play Harley (I mean, other than in Todd's movie or the animated show/s.)" So it sounds like we won't see Robbie as Harley anytime soon, but Gunn is more than open to it, or she could return to a new role in this new DC Universe.

Joker: Folie à Deux is coming out this year and has been heavily teased by director Todd Phillips. Gaga is taking on the role, and we can expect people to be Totally Normal about it because that's what people do with these characters. The film aims to be completely different from anything we've seen in comic book movies, a musical, with the most direct comparison tone-wise likely being something like Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It currently has a release date of October 4, 2024. On the television front, the animated show remains one of the best things to come out of the DC streaming service and has been renewed for a season 5, but we likely won't see it until the end of 2024 or early 2025. So, while any Gunn and Robbie collaborations might be on hold for the foreseeable future, there is still plenty of Harley Quinn on the horizon for fans of the character.
