We're still waiting for Star Wars to make its return to the big screen, but we're starting to learn a little more about one of the confirmed titles. Right now, the film is set to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and will bring back Daisy Ridley as Rey is the one we know only bits and pieces about. For a hot minute there, it looked like it would be the first Star Wars movie to make it to the big screen, but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore. It's not that surprising considering how successful Star Wars has been on streaming, so bridging that gap for the big return makes sense on a certain level. However, it sounds like things are starting to come together a little more. Ridley has been teasing little things here and there, but Obaid-Chinoy recently teased in an interview on Stars Sirius XM 109 (via ScreenRant) that Rey has been busy since the end of The Rise of Skywalker and there will be some sort of Jedi Academy.
"…at the heart of it, for me, is Rey Skywalker, is Daisy Ridley and her story and taking her on an adventure to a Jedi academy. And sort of creating a world that is a natural dovetail to the story we've seen her go through the last three episodes," she explained. Obaid-Chinoy is also making sure to talk to all of the people who have worked within the Star Wars universe regarding the story and the film, "I've had conversations with J.J. Abrams, and I've had conversations with George Lucas and, of course, Dave Filoni, who's a big part of the Star Wars universe now, we speak very often, and Kathleen Kennedy, and Carrie Beck, and Simon Emanuel."
The Many Star Wars Films In Development
Before January 2024, we would have said that Obaid-Chinoy seemed to be the furthest along in terms of development compared to the other Star Wars films that have been announced. However, with Jon Favreau joining the ranks and The Mandalorian & Grogu going into production this year, it's unclear where Ridley's return to the big screen falls on this suddenly hectic timeline. Dave Filoni is using his film as a final wrap to all of the television shows. So, all seasons need to be released before that can happen. James Mangold brought on a new writer for his film, which reportedly has a working title of Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, and it looks like his next project after A Complete Unknown. Taika Waititi has said he's in no rush to get this film off the ground and is still in the scripting phase. Shawn Levy is deep in Deadpool & Wolverine press rounds and Stranger Things.
There is still no release date for the film that stars Ridley, though people have some guesses, and you can bet people will speculate about this film for the next couple of years until we get some more solid details. Let's cool it on the sequel or trilogy talk first, though, and let Obaid-Chinoy make her Star Wars film without expecting to set up two more.
