Criminal Minds: It's "Case Closed" For Long-Running CBS Series with Season 15

After having spent most of the century on television, CBS is calling "case closed" on one of the longest-running scripted series currently on television as Criminal Minds will wrap up its series run with the upcoming 15th season. The 10-episode final season will begin production immediately following the completion of production on the 14th season's finale, and is set to air duirng the 2019-2020 television season.

Just to put its longevity into perspective, the series will match the runs of NBC's ER and CBS' CSI, with only Gunsmoke, L&O, L&O: SVU, NCIS, and Grey's Anatomy currently ahead of it on the list of longest-running dramas. By the time the credits roll for the last time, Criminal Minds will have produced 325 episodes–positioning it as one of the top 20 series with the most episodes of all time.

But before Criminal Minds fans start getting too nostalgic, executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer has some details on what viewers can expect from the final 10 episodes:

● The final season's episodes will be more serialized than in the past, and will include a two-part season premiere; as well as a "major confession" and "a BAU member in jeopardy."

● The overarching theme revolves around "a very worthy adversary for the team, especially for David Rossi (Joe Mantegna)," who will be introduced later this season. The team will be forced to go up against "another formidable villain and will be concluding the 10 episodes with a showdown with that person."

● With it being the final season, it would reasonable for fans to expect some familar faces to return–even the not-so-friendly faces. According to Messer: "We have one in the works right now who's a very memorable villain, but I don't want to say too much if it doesn't work out with casting."

● Of course, some friendly faces, too:

"I am very hopeful that we can honor all of those characters who have been beloved and with this team, with the audience for years, but I don't know what that's going to look like; I don't know the logistics of anything or the story. That won't be shooting until the spring, so I have some time to think about it, but the hope is to be able to honor all of that history, all of those heroes who have come and gone."
