"Cursed": Bella Dayne ("Humans") Joins Netflix's Arthurian Series Adapt
Netflix is adding to its casting "round table" for its series adaptation of Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler's upcoming illustrated book Cursed, with actress Bella Dayne (Humans, Troy: Fall of a City) set to join in a series regular role. Dayne joins Katherine Langford, Devon Terrell, Gustaf Skarsgard, Peter Mullan, Lily Newmark, and more in the role of Red Spear, a regal and ruthless viking captain, with an eye for treasure. Loyal to no one, the Red Spear and her crew raid villages along the coast of Britain until a Fey stowaway boards her ship and entangles their fates (based on exclusive reporting from Deadline Hollywood).
From what we could see from the first official image released of Langford (13 Reasons Why) in June 2019, life isn't as peaceful for Nimue as she would like it to be – and it would appear from where she's looking that some of those problems can be quite sizeable. Here's a look at the full image for yourselves, thanks to the fine folks at Netflix's "See What's Next" Twitter account:
Based on comic book writer/artist Miller (The Dark Knight Returns) and writer/producer Wheeler's (Puss In Boots) upcoming illustrated young adult book of the same name, the series highlights the Lady of the Lake, a key figure in King Arthur legend. Jon East (Killing Eve) and Zetna Fuentes (Ray Donovan, Jessica Jones) are two of the directors set, with Fuentes executive producing the first two episodes of the 10-episode series, with Wheeler serving as writer and showrunner. Miller and Wheeler will executive produce, with Alex Boden (Sense8) producing and Silenn Thomas serving as co-executive producer.
Netflix's Cursed also stars Devon Terrell (Barry), Gustaf Skarsgård (Westworld, Vikings), Peter Mullan (Ozark), Lily Newmark (Temple, Sex Education), Shalom Brune-Franklin (The State, Our Girl), Daniel Sharman (Fear the Walking Dead, Medici), Sebastian Armesto (Poldark, Broadchurch), Emily Coates (Flack), Catherine Walker (Versailles, The Delinquent Season), and Billy Jenkins (The Crown, Holmes & Watson, Humans).
Officially announced to series in March 2018, Cursed is a re-imagination of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue (Langford), a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. It is a coming-of-age story whose themes are familiar to our own time: the obliteration of the natural world, religious terror, senseless war, and finding the courage to lead in the face of the impossible.
"I have always been entranced by the mythological Arthur story—and by Nimue, in particular. It can be interpreted in any number of ways—from a delightful children's story, as in The Sword in the Stone, to a terrifying interpretation like Excalibur."
– Frank Miller
Simon & Schuster is set to publish the companion book in fall 2019, written by Wheeler with Miller providing full-color and black-and-white illustrations. What makes this project unique is that it might just be the first time that the same creative team will be writing the book and the television series it's based on simultaneously.
"I am honored and humbled to be working with the living legend Frank Miller on Cursed. I cannot think of a writer-artist who has had a more formative impact on my growth as a storyteller."
– Tom Wheeler
