Harry Potter: David Yates on Why He's Not Returning for Max Series

Though wishing the Max series well, filmmaker David Yates explained why he won't be returning for the "Harry Potter" streaming series.

To say that there's going to be a ton of global attention being paid to Warner Bros. Discovery's original "Harry Potter" scripted series when casting & production gets underway – for a number of seriously varying reasons. Expected to be a faithful adaptation of the books, author J.K. Rowling is set to executive produce, with Warner Bros. Television producing. But if anyone is expecting famed franchise filmmaker David Yates to be rejoining the franchise – think again. Speaking with ComicBook.com in support of his upcoming Netflix film Pain Hustlers, Yates explains why he "could not, in any conceivable way, get involved" but adds that he thinks "it's gonna be amazing to see them re-explore all it can be for the next generation."

Yates Appreciates His "Harry Potter" Experience, But He's Moved On…: "Do you know what? Honestly, I could not, in any conceivable way, get involved. It's simply: I spent a long time at that school, in those corridors, and in those classrooms, and it was an exquisite experience and one I will always treasure. But to go back and do another year or two, for me, I feel I've left it. Being in the back of a van with [producer] Lawrence [Grey] in Atlanta of Savannah, hoofing it to try and make a drama, to me, at the moment, is more compelling than going through the hallowed gates of Hogwarts."

Yates: "Harry Potter" Series Could Be "Amazing Experience" for "Next Generation of Filmmakers": "I wish that show so well; it's gonna be amazing to see them re-explore all it can be for the next generation. I think it'll be a challenge for everyone involved, but it's a very exciting enterprise, and I wish it well. It was an amazing experience for me, and I know the other filmmakers who were involved, and it will be for the next generation of filmmakers."

The stories from each of Rowling's Harry Potter books will become "a decade-long series produced with the same epic craft, love, and care this global franchise is known for. The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of fantastic detail, much-loved characters, and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over twenty-five years. Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic, and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally." The series stems from Max in association with Brontë Film and TV & Warner Bros. Television. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts are set to executive produce, with David Heyman currently in talks to executive produce.
