Jessica Jones Season 2: Janet McTeer Shares Hints About Her Mysterious Character

When Marvel's Jessica Jones returns for season 2 starting March 8th on Netflix, Jessica (Krysten Ritter) will be just as tortured, but she will have gotten Kilgrave (David Tennant) out of her life. Now she is searching for answers about what happened to her and it leads to a mysterious and yet-unnamed woman played by Janet McTeer.

The Tony Award winning actress, best known for her stage work, is diving head first into streaming series joining both Jessica Jones and Ozark season 2. The character doesn't appear until the third episode, but is central to the mystery of just how Jessica got her abilities. She talked to Variety about joining a superhero show.

When I spoke to [executive producers] Melissa [Rosenberg] and Raelle [Tucker], they were just so interesting and so clever and so passionate about the project. They sent some scripts which I really liked, and so I watched the first season. I thought the first season was really good, but the second season is even better. When people are writing for something that's already a success, it means they can be bigger and broader and bolder. I thought it was a great, fun opportunity to play a part that I hadn't played before on a venue that I hadn't played before.

She wasn't as forthcoming when it came to describing the character she's playing. She danced around questions so skillfully she would've won DWTS.

On describing her character:

I would describe her as very driven, very intense, very goal-oriented and very, very, very complicated.

She says we will eventually learn her name and that there isn't a line between McTeer and the character; she is everything that the character is. Whether the character is evil or dangerous, McTeer says that it depends on your perspective. And on whether she is a friend or foe to Jessica, the actress says she's a bit of both.

But the last two questions might be the most important. Is her character the 'big bad' for the season:

Probably not. Certainly the most difficult.

And if the actress enjoyed filming her stunt scenes:

It was great! I loved it. I've never had to do anything like that before. I really, really enjoyed that. Great, great fun — but hard on the knees.

The last one tells us that the character has some physicality to it. That should start some good speculation.

Marvel's Jessica Jones returns March 8th on Netflix. Where normally they release the Marvel series on Fridays, March 8th is International Women's Day, making it a great date to release the new season on.
