'Killing Eve' Season 2, Episode 2: Murder is "Nice and Neat" (PREVIEW)

Killing Eve is back, and I am relieved to say that it's just as good as it was during the first season, which is a minor miracle, considering the change in show runners.

In the season 2 premiere, we find Villanelle (Jodie Comer) checking herself into a hospital in a rather unorthodox way- that being said, this is Villanelle, so maybe she always gets medical attention by throwing herself onto the hood of a passing taxi?

Eve (Sandra Oh) has made it back to London after attempting to kill Villanelle, and has a series of breakdowns over the murder. Luckily, her former boss Carolyn (Fiona Shaw) gets her back on track by taking her to a morgue to assess a potential victim's corpse.

Eve, flush with success, is brought back into MI6 to try and track down Villanelle before the assassin finds her instead.

Therein lies the problem- Villanelle is even more obsessed with Eve than she was, convinced that Eve tried to kill her to prove how much she cares. Villanelle kills a kid in the hospital, and makes her escape wearing his pajamas.

The last we see of Villanelle, she's hiding in the boot of a vacationing family's car, headed towards London.

So, what else did we learn?

Villanelle might be semi-compassionate: In "Do You Know How to Dispose of a Body?", Villanelle befriends young Gabriel (Pierre Atri), who has been horribly disfigured after the car accident that left him an orphan. After Villanelle tells him that he's pretty hideous (which she's excited about), Gabriel laments that he wishes he had died in the accident. Villanelle holds him a moment, then snaps his neck and tucks him in to bed.

Is she feeling compassion, or just eliminating a witness? Regardless, Villanelle's relationship with Gabriel was sweet for a bit. He really enjoyed her honesty, and she seemed to like him as long as he served a purpose.

Eve can think on the fly, even in shock: While waiting to board a train home, Eve finds the bloody knife she used to stab Villanelle. She makes it to a restroom to dispose of the blade by hiding it in the sanitary napkin dispenser (brilliant), then claiming she had food poisoning to throw off station security. Remember, she's barely keeping it all together, and still out-witting everyone.

Eve and Villanelle are perfect contrasts: Villanelle manages to escape the hospital, which is in lock-down after Gabriel's body is found- by telling the guard that she just got terrible lab results, and needs a moment alone. This is all on the fly, knowing full well the guard's empathy is a tool she can use.

The Twelve, a shadow group of international movers and shakers, are after Villanelle, and made short work of her nosy next-door neighbor. It will be interesting to see how the Twelve come into play as the second season develops!

Finally, it's great to see that the show has retained its sense of humor, which was a bit of a concern when Phoebe Waller-Bridge moved on to do another season of Fleabag. Killing Eve is still refreshingly witty, with excellent dialogue and razor-sharp characters.

On Sunday, April 14th, BBC America and AMC will be airing "Nice and Neat", and it looks like Villanelle makes it to London- hopefully, that vacationing family survives the experience!
