'Neon Genesis Evangelion': Stream Hideaki Anno's Influential Anime on Netflix June 21st! [VIDEO]

Thankfully for Netflix, anime fans tend to be very patient folk.

Now it may not always seem like it – social media does have a tendency to give the impression that some loud voices represent an entire fanbase – but when you consider that many anime in the past left fans waiting years between seasons/parts, their patience is pretty damn impressive.

Neon Genesis Evangelion fans are seeing their patience paid off in a big way on Friday. After officially announcing in November 2018 that the influential series would be making its Netflix debut, things went dark in terms of a start date. Then 2018 turned to 2019… January became March before any of us knew it… and now we have this: an official countdown clock (courtesy of the streaming service) to the premiere date reveal, set to go off at 10 p.m. ET.

Neon Genesis Evangelion premieres on Netflix on June 21st!

In terms of what exactly Hideaki Anno's Neon Genesis Evangelion fans will get when the anime drops, the deal includes the original 26-episode Japanese television series (originally broadcast from 1995-1996) as well as two follow-up films: Evangelion: Death (True) 2 and The End of Evangelion.

Set 15 years after apocalyptic event "Second Impact" left Tokyo – and much of the world – in ruins, our hero Shinji Ikari joins a group of other teens as part of an experimental program. Here's the catch: Shinji's father is actually the one behind the experiment that results in the teens modified to command huge mecha called Evangelions to take the fight to a hostile alien race known as the Angels.

In the year 2015, the world stands on the brink of destruction. Humanity's last hope lies in the hands of Nerv, a special agency under the United Nations, and their Evangelions, giant machines capable of defeating the Angels who herald Earth's ruin. Gendou Ikari, head of the organization, seeks compatible pilots who can synchronize with the Evangelions and realize their true potential. Aiding in this defensive endeavor are talented personnel Misato Katsuragi, Head of Tactical Operations, and Ritsuko Akagi, Chief Scientist.

Face to face with his father for the first time in years, 14-year-old Shinji Ikari's average life is irreversibly changed when he is whisked away into the depths of Nerv, and into a harrowing new destiny—he must become the pilot of Evangelion Unit-01 with the fate of mankind on his shoulders.

Written by Hideaki Anno, Neon Genesis Evangelion is a heroic tale of a young boy who will become a legend. But as this psychological drama unfolds, ancient secrets beneath the big picture begin to bubble to the surface…
