'Star Trek Discovery' Season 2 Finale: A Two-Parter Is "Such Sweet Sorrow" [PREVIEW]

Are you ready for some space drama? Emotional goodbyes? A guest appearance by the Enterprise? Heavy action sequences that fade to black only to leave "To Be Continued" on the screen?

If the answer to all of those questions is "hell, yeah!", then you are ready for this week's episode of Star Trek: Discovery "Such Sweet Sorrow." CBS All Access released images and a preview of the episode, along with the reveal that Season 2's thirteenth episode will actually the the first half of the season's finale. Looking at the season as a whole, the episode's title, and the released studio footage, it becomes clear that "Such Sweet Sorrow" is going to be an intense ride. We already know that we should expect the unexpected. Now it appears fans are also in for teary separations, the re-emergence of old friends, a battle, and maybe, just maybe, some time travel.

Light spoilers and maximum speculation below.

Prepare For Battle

The preview for "Such Sweet Sorrow" at the end of last week's episode "Through the Valley of Shadows," was a direct continuation of the closing scenes of the episode. In the face of a fleet of Section 31 ships, Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) suggests that they blow the Discovery and all of its priceless sphere data. Captain Pike (Anson Mount) calls the Enterprise for help and the crew prepare to abandon ship.

Jumping into the trailer, it appears that Pike and at least a good portion of the crew go over to the Enterprise. Scenes include interior scenes that do no take place on Discovery, including a battle scene from the bridge. Also, Pike is in his command gold – a clear sign he has left the Discovery. While Star Trek canon continuity problems still plague Discovery, it will be exciting to see a battle from the point of view of the Enterprise bridge. It's been a long time – at least for the Prime universe. Judging from the last scene of the trailer, either a portion of the battle takes place on the Discovery, or the crew splits up.

Released images (included throughout this article) give a slightly different perspective, however. While the preview shows multiple scenes aboard the Discovery, most are of the crew leaving the ship. Strangely, we see Michael Burnham in what appears to be Section 31 black while the rest of the Discovery crew appear in their standard uniforms. Given Burnham's penchant for sacrificing herself, as well as her hypothesis that she is capable of defeating Control, it is very possible that Michael is headed out on some super dangerous mission with Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). The move would also make sense in the context of Season 2's concentration on Burnham's mother figures.

About That Goodbye

The William Shakespeare quote "Parting is such sweet sorrow" – the source of the episode's title – is from Romeo and Juliet. Could the source of the quote be a hint that the "parting" being discussed is the one between Burnham and Tyler (Shazad Latif)? The emotional scene between the two that is featured in the preview as well as the studio-provided stills definitely looks like a goodbye of some kind. My bet is still on Burnham going off on some long-shot mission and leaving the Discovery crew – and Spock (Ethan Peck) and Tyler – behind.

What Does Po Know?

Remember those pesky Star Trek: Short Treks? The ones that were supposed to be fun one-off episodes? Well, apparently Season 2 is not done with them yet. After the Saru (Doug Jones) Short Trek was repeatedly referenced in his evolution storyline, viewers started to suspect that the shorts actually tied into Discovery's second season. The fact that released images from "Such Sweet Sorrow" feature Po (Yadira Guevara-Prip), the alien girl from the Tilly (Mary Wiseman)-centered Short Trek "Runaway," gives further credence to the theory. It will definitely be interesting to see what the new Queen of Xahia has to contribute to the season finale – and the mystery of where Tilly was last week.

Speaking Of Those Short Treks

Remember "Calypso?" The Short Trek featuring Aldis Hodge as Craft, a marooned future human who happens upon the Discovery 1000 years in the future. You know, fifty years after the time Dr. Burnham (Sonja Sohn) was tied to in the Red Angel suit? In that short, the now conscious Discovery AI says that her crew abandoned her, but told her they would come back for her. This can't just be a coincidence. I really think that somehow, Discovery is headed to the future.

Everything so far in Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery has been designed to teach viewers that we don't know what we think we know, so I can't imagine that is going to end now. We can – and will – draw connections and make predictions, but the reality is likely something we haven't even thought of yet. How exciting!

The first part of Star Trek: Discovery'sSeason 2 finale "Such Sweet Sorrow" will be available Thursday April 10 at 8:30 p.m. EDT on CBS All Access.
