Superman: Legacy: Anthony Carrigan Shares More Metamorpho Insights
Superman: Legacy star Anthony Carrigan discussed personal connections with Metamorpho, a key difference between heroes & villains, and more.
For this go-around, we're giving Superman: Legacy writer/director James Gunn a break when it comes to offering insights into the 2025-debuting feature film. That's because we have Anthony Carrigan, aka Metamorpho, sharing some thoughts on playing villains as opposed to heroes, his personal connections with the superhero, and more. Nominated for his third Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series as NoHo Hank in HBO's Bill Hader-starring Barry, Carrigan made clear during his interview with Rolling Stone that specific details on the film were on lockdown – but he's definitely appreciating the opportunity. "I can't give away any of those details, but I can just reiterate that I'm so grateful to be part of it. I've been wanting to work with James Gunn for such a long time, and this opportunity is the coolest that you could possibly get. I'm so, so grateful," he offered.
"It's very refreshing to be playing a superhero, finally, but I don't think it quite matters to me," Carrigan shared when discussing how he approaches playing a "big bad" compared to a superhero role like the one he has in the upcoming DC Studios film. "My favorite game is to, no matter what I'm given, try to find the opposites. See what's possible in terms of stretching a character in different directions. With all of my characters, I really try to find some sense of authenticity and truth in what I can relate to about the character. With Metamorpho, this is a character who was almost cursed with his powers and thought that he was freakish in terms of what he looked like, and that's something I could totally relate to because of my alopecia."
Carrigan went into further detail on the personal connections he feels with the hero and how that helped define his views of Metamorpho. "Alopecia is an interesting experience to go through because it, more than anything, rocks your world when it comes to your identity," Carrigan shared. "You go from someone who moves throughout the world in a way that everyone looks at you and you are who you are, and then all of a sudden, things start to change on your head and on your face. People stop looking at you, and they start looking at your condition, and that is a really alienating, very dehumanizing thing." As the actor sees it, how one accepts themselves is what differentiates the villains from the heroes. "Villains don't really accept themselves all that much. Superheroes tend to," Carrigan added. "There's this concept of acknowledging one's journey and leading with love as opposed to bitterness and wishing that you could change."
Set for a July 11, 2025, premiere, DC Studios' Superman: Legacy stars (so far) David Corenswet (Hollywood) as Superman/Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane. In addition, the cast includes Nicholas Hoult (The Great) as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho.
