Syfy Says Goodbye to 'The Expanse' After 3 Seasons

Syfy announced yesterday that their sci-fi epic series The Expanse won't get a fourth season at the network. Based on a series of novels under the name James S. A. Corey, a pseudonym for writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, The Expanse was one of the best received new sci-fi series in years and was one of the three new series the network ordered after their move to return to their roots.

While the other two series, The Magicians and 12 Monkeys, both got renewed, word is that the Expanse was cancelled due to the nature of the contract with Alcon Television Group, who finances and produces the series. The agreement Syfy had for the series only gave them the first-run linear rights in the United States. Meaning the network needed the fans to watch the live broadcast, which is not where the majority of the audience for a show like this comes from. Most genre series tick up quite a bit after the initial airing when played on-demand or streaming. Syfy got none of that.

This doesn't necessarily mean the end of the series as Alcon has promised to look for other opportunities for the show.

The Expanse stars Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams and Thomas Jane.
