The Affair's Ruth Wilson Joins BBC Adaptation of 'His Dark Materials'
Seems like it was just this morning that I was posting that James McAvoy had joined the BBC adaptation of Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials book series… oh, wait, it was just this morning. Now we have word that Ruth Wilson (The Affair) has joined the cast as well. Wilson will be playing Marisa Coulter, one of the main characters and former lover of Lord Asriel (McAvoy).
As Deadline reports, Coulter is a main character through all three novels (Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass) who takes in Lyra (Dafne Keen) and is thought to be the girl's mother. The character was played by Nicole Kidman in the 2007 film adaptation called The Golden Compass.
The series will be written by Jack Thorne (National Treasure) and directed by Tom Hooper (The King's Speech). She joins a cast that includes McAvoy (X-Men), Keen (Logan), Clarke Peters (The Wire) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton). The series is described as:
"… a complex tale of physics, philosophy and theology featuring witches and armored polar bears. It tells the story of two children, Lyra and Will, who wander through a series of parallel universes."
Bad Wolf and BBC Worldwide are looking for a U.S. and global distributor, with Apple and Netflix believed to be among the top suitors.
