What If…? S02 Goes "1602": The Watcher, Captain Carter Compare Notes

Here's a sneak preview clip for Marvel Studios and Disney+'s What If...? Season 2 Episode 8: "What If... the Avenger Assembled in 1602?"

After today, it's seven episodes down and two to go for the second season of Marvel Studios & Disney+'s What If…? But as epic as the previous seven chapters have been, Friday's episode is the one that's been on a lot of Marvel fans' radars since it was first confirmed. In S02E08: "What If… the Avenger Assembled in 1602?" we get a much better appreciation for where Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell) ended up at the end of the fifth chapter. And there's a lot more in play than just getting to know the medieval-era variants of Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) that greeted her upon her arrival. In the following clip from tomorrow's episode, Carter and The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) have a rooftop chat to make sure everyone's on the same page – and the big voyeur dude realizes that Carter knows a lot more than he realized…

Here's a look at an exclusive clip from Friday's episode that was released earlier today via ComicBook.com, followed by a look back at Neil Gaiman's reaction to learning that his work would serve as the basis for an episode of the animated anthology series:

Written by Gaiman and penciled by Andy Kubert, with digital painting from Richard Isanove, the eight-issue limited series Marvel 1602 placed popular characters like the X-Men, Doctor Doom, the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and others in the Elizabethan era where the universe is threatened by a mysterious force. But now comes an even bigger question. Will the creators get the credit in the episode? In a response on Bluesky, Gaiman shared that was "the first I've heard of it" when it came to the MCU series' episode being inspired by his limited series. In a follow-up, Gaiman confirmed that while he was "looking forward to seeing it," he's not involved:

The animated series is executive produced by Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Bryan Andrews, and AC Bradley.
