"What We Do in the Shadows": Behind the Scenes at the Vampire Lair
The first season of What We Do in the Shadows certainly surprised a lot of us. Sure, we knew Taika Watiti and Jemaine Clement were involved, but there was a certain glee after starting the pilot, when you realize that you really can take a formula that worked really well in a movie and translate that wonderfully into a television series.

We had every reason to worry. Anyone remember the Zombieland pilot that Amazon tried to push out into the world? Luckily someone recognized that for the abomination that it was and double-tapped it before the show got a full season order.
Adapting movies to television can be really, really hard. Even more so a movie as well loved as What We Do in the Shadows.
Part of the success of What We Do in the Shadows is that the creative crew didn't try to copy the movie exactly. Sure, it's a documentary about vampires, but we're following a new group of bloodsuckers now. The Vampire house of Staten Island has four of the best vampires I've seen since Jerry Dandrich moved next door. There's Nandor the Relentless, who has trouble with keeping his cool in the modern world. Then there is Laszlo (Matt Berry) and his wife, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), a vampire couple who have been together for centuries. Finally, there is Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), the energy vampire.
These four vampires live together under the watch of Guillermo (Harvey Guillen), Nandor's familiar. Guillermo wants nothing more than to be a familiar, but his family tree is hiding a secret that could be deadly to the vampires.
The vampires live in an ancient, gorgeously Gothic house in Staten Island. The set that the show uses to film all of the indoor shots in is an amazing addition to the show, and acts as a character in its own right.

What We Do in the Shadows will be returning for a second season on FX in 2020, and can be streamed in its entirety from the network's website.
