Is A Colourist Worthy Of Royalty?
It was just a side mention by Tony Harris as part of his series of posts creating a new guild for comic creators. But it was one that launched a very interesting response from Image Comics' Erik Larsen, and a flurry of posts from, it seemed, a good percentage of the comic book industry. Tony Harris posted…
another thing( among MANY) that SAEG wants to tackle, is Colorists getting cover credit AND royalties.
And it brought a storm. Erik Larsen posted;
@TONYFINGHARRIS I don't know of a colorist that moves the needle–so I don't think they should get royalties–same with letterers. Sorry.
@TONYFINGHARRIS yes–some do great work–and they should be paid well for that work–but if sales don't move–it's not an incentive job.
If Alan Moore comes on a book–sales go up–he deserves a piece of that–if @THEHITCHFACTORY draws a book increase–he deserves a piece
If a great colorist gets on a book–sales are unaffected–and that color services the art–to my way of thinking–he shouldn't get royalties
Pay better colorist more than poor ones–get them on the best books–absolutely–but that's it.
Talking to @Todd_McFarlane he said–"I bust my balls to get Alan Moore to write an issue of Spawn–sales go up on that issue– (cont)
"…what did the colorist do to deserve more money on that issue?" Hard to argue with that logic.
Cat. Pigeons. Put Amongst. This let to a flurry of hundreds of posts, back and forth. ere are just three tasters…
@ErikJLarsen B&W books don't sell as much as color. Maybe as a special, but not as a regular series.
@SotoColor see the Walking Dead–black and white and doing quite well.
and…
@ErikJLarsen Not to me. If I write a book and am steady on it and sales don't go up or down, I get royalties. So I don't think saying…
@ErikJLarsen …the colorist didn't make 'em go up or down means he shouldn't share. He's part of he reason the book earns the money…
@ErikJLarsen …that it does, so to my mind he deserves to participate.
@KurtBusiek but what you write affects sales even though you're a constant. If you have Wolverine guest star YOU made that choice.

@KurtBusiek Now you've opted to give them a lower rate with promises of royalties but your story choices are affecting their income.

and…
@ErikJLarsen "letterers too? Editors? Assistant editors?" If they're part of the creative team, creative direction, then Yes.
@MarkSweeney what ends up happening would be people getting a lower page rate with a promise of possible royalties.
It's not like there's an endless supply of money. The money has to come from somewhere.
Come by, read a few hundred posts, pick a side, pitch in…
