To Boldly Drink…. At San Diego Comic-Con

Hey Pals,

There are some simple, common pleasures in life that bring a spring to your step and a smile to your face. For me, that's a new pair of socks, the smell of freshly cut grass, and the discovery of a new beer. The fine folks at Schmaltz brewery did the latter for me, and in a way that tickled me all the way down to my geeky toes.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first episode of Star Trek, Schmaltz, in collaboration with craft brewers "The Federation of Beers" has released a limited edition American Pale Ale to commemorate the diamond jubilee of this august franchise. The name of the beer? "The Trouble with Tribbles".

I was invited to a tasting of this new offering. I'll admit that I came into the tasting a bit skeptical. lap a Star Trek logo onto anything and Trekkies will buy. The temptation to move sub-par product under the Star Trek brand is strong, but Schmaltz and the Federation have resisted that temptation. The beer has a delightful fruity bouquet with a bit of spicy kick at the end.

DSC01957What's more important is that the recipe honors the source material. I've seen Easter eggs in movies and TV, but this is the first time I've found them in a beer. In the TOS episode "Trouble with Tribbles" the titular furballs threatened the shipment of "Quadrotriticale" a grain crucial to the salvation of an agrarian planet. As a shout out to this episode, the recipe uses triticale, the 21st century equivalent to that grain. To further the cosmic connection, the recipe also uses a combination of Comet, Galaxy, Polaris, Aurora and Admiral (Kirk) hops.

Canadian based "The Federation of Beers" has the license from CBS to produce Star Trek themed brews. Their previous releases include Vulcan Ale, Klingon Warnog, and other Trek inspired beers. Star Trek: Trouble with Tribbles, is a delightful brew available in a majority of states.  I know I'll be buying a sixer.

Dear Red, If you're reading this, you've gotten out. And if you've come this far, maybe you're willing to come a little further. You remember the name of the town, don't you? I could use a good man to help me get my project on wheels. I'll keep an eye out for you and the chessboard ready. Remember, Red. Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. I will be hoping that this letter finds you, and finds you well. Your friend, Will Romine.
