Frank Cho On Axel Alonso As A Champion Of Artists
I was working on my own In Defence Of Marvel piece, but it seems Frank Cho has beaten me to it. He writes for Bleeding Cool,
The last few days I've seen people slamming Marvel, and specifically Axel Alonso, over his comments from the Marvel Retailer's Summit. I've been on the receiving end of a negative mob mentality on the social media more than once, so I feel I have to speak up for Axel. As many of you may know, I'm not the biggest fan of some of the overt social messages in comics in recent years (my outrage sketch covers illustrate that), but speaking from my personal experience working with Axel at Marvel, I can honestly say Axel Alonso has been a champion of my art and all artists since as long as I've known him.
His taste in art is wide and diverse, ranging from the classical to the avant-garde. In all my 14 years at Marvel, I've never met a more passionate editor when it comes to art and artists. Not only has he been a big advocate for me, but he has been a great advocate for other artists. I've seen him repeatedly think outside the box and matching artists with the right projects, artists like Richard Corben on Cage, Brian Stelfreeze on Black Panther, and me on Savage Wolverine to name a few. Not all choices were successful, but anyone willing to make those kind of choices is someone who is finely tuned into artists and their untapped potential.
I know it's fashionable to be an internet armchair quarterback and tear people down for fun over the slightest provocations, but tearing Axel down over this is something I don't agree with. In my opinion, Axel Alonso has always been a champion for art and artists, and he always will be.
