Will Mary Jane Suit Up In Spider-Man Homecoming? Marvel Trademarks Iron Spider, Iron Jane And Spider-Gwen

On 18th of March 2016, Bleeding Cool nicknamed this character, as shown at the Diamond Retailer Breakfast before C2E2 as "Iron Jane".

Not the most creative of nicknames, I'll give you, for Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man's Iron Spider costume from Civil War, courtesy of Iron Man, as painted by Alex Ross.

But it was picked up in a few places, on Reddit, on CBR boards, by comic companies referring to another similar cover… and then by cosplayers.

Recently, Mary Jane was appointed personal assistant to Tony Stark. After his recent collapse into coma at the end of Civil War II, Mary Jane has been running the Stark company as the Iron Men titles, along with all the other Brian Bendis books, studiously ignore the Secret Empire storyline.

We have seen Riri Williams, Iron Heart, take the lead of Invincible Iron Man, and it's unclear as to what Mary Jane Watson's role will be going forward. Well, Marvel's trademark department have helped out with that.

They have just registered trademark applications for Iron Heart, Iron Spider, Spider-Gwen… and Iron Jane. Due to the nature of trademarks, in order to keep them, Marvel will have to use them in the titles or covers of products. Like Iron Heart getting her own named title when Tony Stark returns to Iron Man. And an Iron Jane comic as well.

Both Iron Heart and Iron Jane are trademarked for Comic books; printed periodicals in the field of comic book stories and artwork.

But Iron Spider is trademarked for toys, games and playthings; gymnastic and sporting articles (except clothing); hand-held units for playing electronic games for use with or without an external display screen or monitor; skins for covering and protecting apparatus; paper party favors; paper party hats; Christmas stockings; Christmas tree ornaments and decorations; snow globes,  Clothing, footwear and headwear, Bags; backpacks; calling card cases; coin purses; fanny packs; key cases; key chains; luggage; luggage tags; purses; umbrellas; wallets, Paper and paper articles; cardboard and cardboard articles; printed matter; publications; books; photographs; portraits; paintings; photo-engravings; stationery; office and school supplies; school supply kits; temporary tattoo transfers; foam stamps; party bags; shopping bags, Apparatus for recording, transmission or reproduction of sound or images; audio books; audio recordings; audio and visual recordings; video game software; computer programs and software; downloadable electronic publications; downloadable game software; downloadable mobile applications; consumer electronics and accessories therefor; eyeglasses and sunglasses and accessories therefor; binoculars; decorative magnets; graduated rulers; microphones; helmets; flotation vests; protective face masks not for medical purposes; snorkels; swimming goggles; swim masks.

Spider-Gwen is trademarked for similar.

Two things from this – it is likely we will be getting an Iron Spider comic book, starring Mary Jane Watson and either an Iron Heart comic or she will guest star in Iron Spider. And people will nickname Mary as Iron Jane.

But also Marvel are preparing for the female-focused Spider-Man movie in the wake of Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Tony Stark's dealing with Spider-Man and his costumes, with the potential that it could be either Mary Jane Watson as Iron Spider, or Spider-Gwen.

Could she – or Michelle – even get in the suit in the Spider-Man film? Possibly.

But as for Iron Jane? You are welcome, Marvel.

Unless of course Bleeding Cool tried to challenge it…
