Sean Gunn Says Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is "Going to Work Itself Out"
One of the biggest stories of 2018 was when Disney decided to fire Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn after some tweets featuring some tasteless jokes reemerged. The fate of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, which was supposed to have a third entry, has been thrown into chaos. At the moment the production has been delayed and there haven't been any announcements about a new director. Instead, there have been a lot of people saying they wouldn't take the job and Marvel trying to downplay how important Gunn was to the cosmic side of the Marvel universe.
At the moment the only thing we know is that Marvel is planning on using Gunn's script when they eventually get the movie off of the ground. Sean Gunn, the brother of James Gunn who plays Kraglin and does the motion capture work for Rocket Raccoon, was on the red carpet for Captain Marvel and Variety asked him if he thought the third movie could work without his brother.
"I don't know exactly how that's all gonna work," he said, "but I feel like we are going to make the third movie, I'm excited to make it, I think it's a disservice to the fans if we didn't make it and I know the people who worked on the 'Guardians' movies are really a family, and we're gonna come together and make the best movie we can regardless of who's in charge. … I just have this feeling everything's gonna work itself out."
The Marvel Cinematic Universe turned ten years old last year and it has taken over a decade for one of the biggest franchises of all time to take a chance on a solo female heroine. Gunn sees it as progress and hopes to see more solo female movies out there.
"It's hard to change Hollywood because people tend to stick with what they perceive works," he explained. "And so, they think, 'Oh this works, so we have to do this.' And so then it's like, 'Oh, we can't headline a superhero movie with a woman, that's outrageous.' Of course it's not outrageous, it's long overdue. But hopefully we're all catching up and I would like to see a lot more female-helmed superhero movies."
Marvel isn't talking about their post-Avengers: Endgame plans and it's going to be interesting to see who they get to take over as director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. As for Gunn, he's moved over to DC and Warner Bros. to direct a soft reboot of Suicide Squad which seems right up his alley.
Summary: Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.
Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will also star Brie Larson, Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
