It changes Batman if he is actually going out at night with the potential to kill people. One thing is crime prevention, saving innocents, the next is executions without trial.

I don't care if it seems naive to some, that is a fundamental difference in what we root for.

The fact that many people want Batman to murder criminals is one of the best arguments to NOT have Batman commit murder. Superheroes are at their best when they give us examples of how we want things to be, rather than exposing us to the grimmer aspects of reality.

For the record, I don't think Batman should kill. You don't need to dress up like a bat to kill people. It makes his modus operandi redundant. Yes, he's brutal. And can be "edgy" if you need that in your fiction, but I don't think he's a murderer, no.
