"Paper Girls" Ordered to Series By Amazon Studios
Deadline has reported that Amazon Studios has made a full series order for an adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang's Paper Girls comic series. Vaughan has a multi-year deal with Legendary Entertainment, with Paper Girls marking the very first project under that agreement.
The new series will be written by Stephany Folsom, who recently co-wrote Toy Story 4 for Disney. Folsom is going to be pretty busy, too, since she'll be a Consulting Producer on the Lord of the Rings series, which is also being produced for Amazon.
The comic series, which is pretty amazing, by the way, follows four girls in 1988 who find themselves caught up in a war between rival factions of time-travelers. The girls end up launched on an adventure through time, hoping to save the world. Some of those adventures involve dinosaurs, and another involves giant robots.
In the early hours after Halloween of 1988, four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls uncover the most important story of all time. Suburban drama and otherworldly mysteries collide in this smash-hit series about nostalgia, first jobs, and the last days of childhood.
Vaughan has a pretty great career as a writer of comics, with the exceptionally entertaining science fiction space opera, Saga, which he co-created with Fiona Staples, and Ex Machina with Tony Harris, We Stand on Guard with Steve Skroce, and Barrier with Marcos Martin. He was the writer on the Marvel series Runaways, which has also had a series made based off of it.
Runaways isn't the only TV project in the works based off of a Brian K. Vaughan comic, with an adaptation of his Y: The Last Man for FX, the aforementioned Runaways for Hulu.
Legendary TV has a pretty busy production slate as well, with Lost in Space on Netflix, Carnival Row for Amazon, and Dune: The Sisterhood, which is underway for WarnerMedia's recently announced HBO Max streaming service.
