"The Boondocks": HBO Max Gives Reboot Series Two Season Order

More misadventures are coming as The Boondocks reboot has been picked up for two seasons, for a total of 24-episodes as well as a 55-minute special for Warner Media's HBO Max streaming platform. Created by Aaron McGruder, the animated series is based on his comic strip of the same name. Known for tackling numerous social issues in a bold, sardonic manner, The Boondocks earned McGruder acclaim as well as Peabody and Image awards.

The new Boondocks follows the adventures of self-proclaimed "Civil Rights Legend" Robert "Granddad" Freeman, and his two rambunctious grandsons Huey and Riley. The family has recently moved to an idyllic community in suburban Maryland only to see it taken over by the tyrannical Uncle Ruckus and his bizarre neo-fascist regime. Life under Ruckus turns out to be an everyday struggle to survive.

The 2005 series (which ran for four seasons) became a popular staple on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Regina King provided the voices for Huey and Riley Freeman, with John Witherspoon playing Robert "Granddad" Freeman and Gary Anthony Williams as Uncle Ruckus.

McGruder will serve as showrunner, and will executive produce alongside Norm Aladjem, Seung Kim, and Meghann Collins Robertson. Sony Pictures Animation will produce the series in partnership with Sony Pictures Television.
