"Game of Thrones" Prequel Dead Forever According to HBO
HBO has officially confirmed that the Game of Thrones prequel series that no-one really wanted in the first place is, as previously announced by Deadline, dead for all time and eternity. I'm pretty sure Spooky Bran saw this coming…
"After careful consideration, we have decided not to move forward to series with the Untitled Game of Thrones prequel. We thank Jane Goldman, S.J. Clarkson, and the talented cast and crew for all of their hard work and dedication."
That's the official word from the premium content service, which has been developing several sequel projects based off of the history of George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire books, which were the inspiration for HBO's long running series.
Game of Thrones finished its long run on HBO in May, with many fans weighing in on what they felt was a bloated, rushed story line that left more questions than it answered.
The newly-canceled series was going to be set in the far past of Westeros, was set to star Naomi Watts and was being developed by Kingsman scribe Jane Goodman. The series did not have a title at the time it was canceled, but had been in development for some time. Goodman took the time to personally contact the cast and crew to notify them of the cancellation.
There is still a Game of Thrones prequel series in development, which will take place in a time frame much closer to the original series. That project is titled House of the Dragon, and will chronicle House Targaryen. The new series is being brought to the screen by Geroge R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, who co-created Colony.
George R.R. Martin took some time out of not finishing the sixth Song of Ice and Fire novel to weigh in on the cancellation news on his blog:
"It goes without saying that I was saddened to hear the show would not be going to series. Jane Goldman is a terrific screenwriter, and I enjoyed brainstorming with her."
We'll have more information on House of the Dragon as we get it!
