Adam Hughes Reaches The Limits Of His Ability With Betty & Veronica #3

The remaking of Archie Comics in recent years has told all sorts of Archie stories in all sorts of styles that would have been unthinkable less than a decade ago, including inspiring the current successful TV show Riverdale.

Which leads us to Betty & Veronica from Adam Hughes. A story that could have been squeezed into 8 pages in the old style has been stretched out into a non-linear three issue series, given plenty of further twists, character context, and artistic muscle flexing along the way. As Pop's Diner is threatened by coffee shop Kweekwegs – taking a leaf from a book that Adam Hughes is a fan of, League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, whose parallel for Starbucks was Queequeg's, both fictional characters in Moby Dick, and used as a fictional coffee shop chain in the Deus Ex games.

Anyway, Adam Hughes…

Moving from pitch-perfect posing for the camera, mixing the form of Manar with the linework of Mucha…

,,,then occasionally going Full Kirby. With just a touch of Kyle Baker…

But even Adam Hughes knows the limits he can reach with comic book storytelling. But is not afraid to lampshade them when they emerge…

And yet Adam, you found a way!

Betty & Veronica #3 by Adam Hughes is published thus week by Archie Comics.
