Amazing Comic Con Aloha Still Going on Tomorrow Despite Incoming Hurricane Lane
The Amazing Comic Con Aloha is this weekend's big comic convention in Honolulu, Hawaii, organised by con-favourite Jimmy Jay. Guests include Evangeline Lilly, Skottie Young, Ryan Ottley, Jim Starlin, Ron Lim, Neal Adams, Tara Strong, Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner, Kevin Eastman, Marv Wolfman, Clay Mann, and many more. But there is concern.
Hurricane Lane, described as "the biggest weather threat to Hawaii in decades", is approaching the area.
Lane is a Category 4 cyclone that could become the first major hurricane to make it to land in Hawaii in 26 years. With sustained winds of 130 mph, it is expected to hit today and tomorrow, with authorities are urging residents to prepare shelter with two weeks' worth of food, water, and other necessities.
There are concerns regarding the possibility of further widespread landslides, and people are already being evacuated to shelters. All schools are closed and employees are staying at home. People have been rushing to stores for supplies and are stocking up on canned foods, ramen, water, and toilet paper. Plywood is being purchased to board up windows, generators are being bought, propane tanks are being filled, and there are long lines for petrol.
President Donald Trump approved a disaster declaration for Hawaii on Wednesday ahead of the storm. And plenty of residents are leaving, with flights out from Honolulu filling up fast.
However, the state is planning to keep airports open — handy for guests flying into the Amazing Aloha Comic Con, which still seems to be planned to continue.
With concern rising, officials issued the following statement yesterday, saying:
"To the Hawaii Fan Community- thanks for reaching out regarding the potential weather situation. Our staff members began arriving this morning in Honolulu, and we have been in touch with the convention center, and other agencies throughout the day and evening. Amazing Comic Con Aloha is still set to open this weekend as planned. We have a full guest list scheduled to be here as advertised, ready to meet the fans of Hawaii!"
And tweeting:
However, not only is the Convention Center in the Danger Zone, it is also planned to be used as a shelter if Hurricane Lane hits. Public transport such as buses to the show have been shut down in anticipation.
The show is still planning on running a pre-show badge pickup event today at the Ala Moana Hotel two blocks from the convention center for any VIP or Ultimate Fan tickets, followed by free drinks at the Nocturna Bar, featuring surprise guests from the show.
That might double as a hurricane shelter too. These guests are still going, and some are already there:
But some are pulling out…
Whatever happens, stay safe out there, folks.
