ComiXology Bestseller List, 31st May 2019 – How Is Poor Marvel Supposed to Compete?
Matthew Snyder, digital dominator, fills us in on how non-print comics are selling… he writes: Welcome to the ComiXology Bestseller List, your guide to see how well your favorite titles are selling digitally. Every week I'll post the ranking of every new title, plus a ranking of the best selling volumes & graphic novels. As always, I hope you find it interesting and informative.
DC, what are you doing? This is a 5th Wednesday. You're not supposed to try hard on a 5th Wednesday. You're supposed to release a few annuals, call it an early week, grab some box wine and binge watch Killing Eve. But releasing Doomsday Clock and Heroes in Crisis? You're making the rest of us who are half-assing our jobs look bad.
And how is poor Marvel supposed to compete when you do this on your off-week? Marvel's self esteem is pretty fragile as it is, and when it gets too low they go into another line wide relaunch phase.
(Shhh… it's okay, Marvel. Amazing Spider-Man and Immortal Hulk are still putting up great numbers. What's that? Yes, Fantastic Four slipping is a cause for concern, but it's still in the Top 10. Don't press that relaunch button, you've still got readers who love you the way you are now. There, there: Jonathan Hickman is going to make everything better).
So even with a much smaller slate of releases, DC easily wins the Top 10 battle this week:
- DC: 37
- Marvel: 18
But it's a very bittersweet week for Tom King. While his Heroes in Crisis run ended on a high note at No. 2 (and let's be honest, no one was beating Doomsday Clock), thereby cementing himself as DC's digital sales MVP, he got some disappointing news. As covered in many Bleeding Cool articles, Tom King will leave Batman at issue #85, short of his planned 100. Batman may have been DC's bestselling ongoing, but DC may have thought it could've done even better. The very mixed reaction from fans on Batman and Heroes in Crisis was probably the biggest factor.
But the mixed reaction didn't seem to affect digital sales. Heroes in Crisis stayed strong right up until the end, and there is no sign of Batman slumping: it beats Justice League every two weeks. So if people were indeed dissatisfied with the product, they didn't show it with their wallet. (At least not on digital)
But we won't have to worry about all of that until early next year. And no matter what your opinion on Tom King is, there is no denying the digital readership is hooked on whatever he's serving. God help the Big 2 if he ever goes indie.
