DC Comics Pulls Trade Paperbacks And Graphic Novels From Titan Books, In Favour Of Diamond

DC Comics Pulls Trade Paperbacks And Graphic Novels From Titan Books, In Favour Of DiamondOnce upon a time, there was a company called Titan Distribution, the leading comic book distributor in the UK. There were also joint companies Titan Books and Titan Magazines. They are also part of the body that owned Forbidden Planet, It was all very cosy.

Then Diamond bought Titan Distribution and turned it into Diamond Comic Distribution UK. Eventually, just as Diamond US, it span out its own bookstore distributor as well. And to be honest, things were still pretty cosy.

Titan Books also had a sweet deal with DC Comics, reprinting their trade paperbacks and graphic novels in the UK, and in many cases receiving the books from the States, warehousing them, and putting a UK price sticker on the back. Often with quite a mark up, though that's changed a bit of late.

There was an interesting crack the other month, when it emerged that Knockabout Comics was to publish League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier by doing the Titan trick, bringing in the book from DC and slapping a sticker on. Titan Books had been forbidden from doing that with this volume by Paul Levitz, over copyright concerns that most found questionable. Solicitation will begin in June, with books shipping through Diamond in November.

And today the other shoe dropped. At the London Book Fair, it was announced that DC Entertainment is passing the rights to distribute their books solely to Diamond Book Distributors UK, cutting Titan Book out as a republisher, and selling directly to UK bookstores.

Titan Magazines will continue to republish DC comics for the UK newsagents and supermarkets. But something tells me it's not quite as cosy now.
