Fan Once Asked Katie Cook To Draw An 'Adorable Fetal Pig In A Jar
Katie Cook, comic book artist and writer is a fan-favorite whose charismatic work even saw her land on Bleeding Cool 's Top 100 Power List in 2013. She's done licensed properties for DC and Marvel Comics, written My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and is well-known for her Star Wars artwork, as well as her well-received Gronk webcomic. Bleeding Cool had a brief chat with her, and herewith, are excerpts:
Abdulkareem Baba Aminu: You've worked on Fraggle Rock, My Little Pony, Star Wars and in many other sandboxes most creators would kill to work on. How does that feel?
Katie Cook: It's one of those things that, sometimes when I work on a project, and I'm turning in things for approval from Lucasfilm, Marvel, etc… I have to step back and say "Holy crap, I'm doing the exact thing I said I would be doing when I was 9. The dream job I picked when I was in elementary school, being a cartoonist, is my JOB." I get to wake up every day and go to my dream job. It feels amazing.
ABA: So there's nothing else you're dying to work on?
KC: Harry Potter… but we all know Harry Potter kids books and comics probably won't happen. (Insert sad trombone here).
ABA: Would you say female comic creators are doing better today?
KC: Doing better? They've always been pretty amazing. There are some amazing ladies making comics right now and the spotlight is on them. That's awesome. Personally, I can't wait to see more of Noelle Stevenson's work. It's great. And Raina Telgemeier is a beast of a creator who basically lives on the NYT Bestseller List for graphic novels with her fun, beautiful, touching books. Who wouldn't want to be her when they grow up?
ABA: You're also famous for making delightful little sketches at cons. What's the strangest request you've ever received for that?
KC: I get weird requests for these all the time. But someone recently asked me to draw an adorable fetal pig in a jar. It actually turned out weirdly cute.
ABA: Speaking of cons, would you charge fans for an autograph?
KC: I don't, unless it's a ton of books (like an entire longbox) and I have a line. Then I usually take a donation for whatever charity I'm taking money for that weekend, but usually toward Parkinson's research).
ABA: Are your daughters showing signs of artistic talent?
KC: They both love to draw… but at 5 and 2 that's probably not saying much. I will say that when my oldest has art on the wall at school and all her other classmates do as well, her art actually looks like things with details and not blobby shapes like soooome artwork. Boom! Parental pride abounds.
ABA: Finally, what's this rumor we've been hearing about an animated TV show based on your all-ages comic, Gronk: A Monster's Story?
KC: That shall stay a rumor for now.
