Florida Comic Shop Launches 'Draw MOMO' Prize Event Tonight

Mez Comics & Games of Bradenton, Florida is launching a 'Draw MOMO' event tonight. Running from 6-8pm, there will be a drawing contest judged by the comic store, with a $75 trade credit for the first place winner and a $25 trade credit for second place.

The "Momo Challenge" is a hoax and urban legend about a nonexistent social media challenge that was spread on Facebook and other media outlets. It was reported that children and adolescents were being enticed by a user named Momo to perform a series of dangerous tasks including violent attacks and suicide. However, the number of actual complaints were small and no police have confirmed anyone was harmed. Awareness of the alleged challenge rose in February 2019 after the Northern Irish police posted a warning on social media and Kim Kardashian posted asking that YouTube remove alleged "Momo" videos.

A photograph of a sculpture produced by Japanese artist Keisuke Aisawa at special effects firm Link Factory, was popularly used to depict "Momo". The firm denies any involvement with the hoax. Keisuke Aiso revealed he threw away the statue after it started to rot. Nevertheless, the character and image has entered pop culture lore and shows no sign of going away. Something Mez Comics is finding an opporunity to help promote their store, and general new works of art.

You can find the store at 4525 30th St W F7, Bradenton, Florida 34207.
