Hey Publishers? Feeling Forced Out Of FCBD Over Price? Maybe We Can Help
Bleeding Cool has looked at publishers who feel they have been forced out of Free Comic Book Day by the falling maximum price allowed to charge retailers of 20 cents a comic (of which Diamond takes an estimated 5 cents).
One Bleeding Cool reader, Brent Erwin who has been both a publisher and retailer during FCBD has been working with their local printer in Dallas to try and get a price as close to that as possible.
He can't get down to 15 cents. But, based on a standard 28 page book on 60lb paper stock, without a separate stock cover, here's how it breaks down.
28 Page Comics
Size: Standard Comic Size
Paper: 60lb coated
Page Count: 28 Pages self cover
Color: 4/4
Binding: Saddle Stitched25,000 units: $6272.70 Per unit cost: 0.250908 cents each
35,000 units: $8367.74 Per unit cost: 0.2390782 cents each
40,000 units: $9080.48 Per unit cost: 0.227012 cents each
Publishers will still have to eat the rest. But it's getting closer and closer to what might be acceptable. And indeed, it doesn't have to just be for Free Comic Book Day…
