Marvel's C.B. Cebulski to Return to Writing in 2019?
Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski is more than just the top editor at Marvel Comics. Cebulski wrote a number of comics for Marvel and Dark Horse. Of course, most of those were written under the pen name Akira Yoshida, a fictional Japanese identity which Cebulski used to skirt Marvel decorum on editors writing comics. Despite criticism for taking writing jobs that could have gone to actual Asian writers, as well as draping his comics in stereotypical Japanese imagery, Cebulski ascended to the role of Editor-in-Chief in 2017, replacing the outgoing Axel Alonso, confessing to the past transgression in the process.
Subsequently, Marvel executive Sana Amanat defended Cebulski's run as Yoshida, saying in part:
This is a world he understood. He's one of my favourite people (and) I think many people who know CB will know that he is one of the most globally minded, and very culturally sensitive as well. That man has lived in Japan, speaks Japanese, and has lived all over the world. He very much associates with Japanese culture. And I think that him writing, for whatever time it was, was him trying to be a writer more than anything else.
Now, it looks like Cebulski may be interested in scratching his writing itch once more, though not in the field of comics. Cebulski is thinking of doing some travel writing in the new year, he revealed on Twitter Christmas Eve, a field in which he could put those "globally minded" and "culturally sensitive" proclivities to use. Cebulski's inspiration comes from finding travel writing in general lackluster in 2018, in particular, a recent article about traveling to Singapore which Cebulski described as "stereotypical."
Cebulski may choose to simply expand the scope of his existing food blog, Eataku (we swear we're not making this up). Though the description of the blog hasn't been updated in a while, still listing his job as talent scout for Marvel, he has been keeping readers regularly updated with reviews of restaurants, though mostly in the New York City area these days, such as an entry from September that describes Cebulski's experience eating at Local Kitchen & Craft Beer Bar in Fairfield, CT.
I've been eating "diner fries", or simply "fries with gravy" since I was a kid, a late night staple food at diners around CT. However, here at Local, not only have they adopted the New Jersey name of the dish, they've taken them to the next level. Yes, there's gravy and cheese, lots of it, but they also add ground Italian sausage and then bake it all, becoming a French fry casserole of sorts…
Extra melty cheese! Fantastic flavors here. Quite impressed!
I also like the fact that their fried pickles are cut into thin wedges rather than "chips"…
Though more recently, Cebulski has mostly posted videos and photos to the blog, like this one from a trip to Madrid:
What's the Marvel policy on an editor-in-chief moonlighting as a travel writer? Can you use your own name?
