Power Up #1 Is Too Awesome To Miss

PowerUp_001_A_MainYou might have come across my epic interview with the creative duo of Kate Leth and Matt Cummings, in issue #17 of Bleeding Cool Magazine last month. We chatted about their new project Power Up, and I could barely contain my excitement for the masses to be able to grab a copy. Well, the time has finally come! After much anticipation, Power Up hits stores this week! From BOOM! Box, written by Kate Leth, with art by Matt Cummings, Power Up is a unique story that has a Scott Pilgrm/Sailor Moon feel to it. Awesome combo, right? The plot follows an interesting group of people (and goldfish) who are all gifted with cosmic abilities at a moment of planetary alignment. The cast includes, Amie the disaffected twenty-something with a lot of attitude, Kevin the washed-up athlete way past his prime, Sandy the mother of two teenagers, and Silas the goldfish.

The first issue is truly a gem. Leth writes a script that provides us with comedy and surprise. While we briefly get to meet all of the characters that I mentioned above, the main focus is on Amie. I found her character to be a fun break from the "norm" that some comics tend to harp on when creating new superheroes. She's really just a cool chick working at a pet store, when her life changes forever. Matt Cummings art is all kinds of whimsical, especially his illustrations of the actual big flash of light that changes this special group. Overall, I feel uplifted and excited to see where Power Up goes from here. Be sure to pick up an issue this week to experience the magic yourself!
