Celebrating Britain's Greatest Living Cartoonist, Ronald Searle

Creator of St Trinian's and illustrator of the Molesworth books, Ronald Searle is celebrated by London's Cartoon Museum right now. Running until the fourth of July, it's the biggest show the museum has ever put on.

A central influence on many British cartoonist, from Gerald Scarfe to Ralph Steadman to Steve Bell to Jamie Hewlett, the show concentrates on his more serious cartooning work, the travel and reportage assignments,the coverage of Eichmanns trial and the drawings made as a Japanese prisoner of wa, following his career until 2007 when he finally retired as a result of Le Monde, the French publication he provided political cartoons for, undergoing cutbacks.

Upcoming events include;

28 April 6.30pm Collaborative Visions: The Illustrations of Ronald Searle
In his long career Searle has illustrated everything from Oliver Twist to Moleworth and wartime autobiographies. Writer and broadcaster Brian Sibley looks at some of his many collaborations.
19 May 6.30pm Drawing the Line
Cartoonist and penman Martin Rowson explore's Searle's masterful penmanship and the different effects he has been able to achieve throughout his career
10 June 6.30pm The Reportage of Ronald Searle
Cartoonist Steve Bell met Searle in January of this year when he had the opportunity to discusses Searle's reportage work with the artist. A chance to learn more about this aspect of Searle's work.
17 June 7pm Cartoonists' Roundtable
A number of Britain's leading cartoonists come together to discuss Searle's achievements and influence.

I grew up on Molesworth and St Trinians thanks to a grandmother who collected them and passed them on. To discover that this is merely a tiny percentage of a much grander body of work is very exciting indeed.
