'Clueless: Senior Year' Review: The Dream Of The '90s Is Still Alive
Cher Horowitz and her totally fashionable friends are back, and frankly, I missed them. Since being introduced to the rich, fabulous, yet well-meaning teenager in 1995, I've wanted more. Obviously I wasn't alone, as Clueless: Senior Year has filled that void that the movie left (the television show didn't do it for me).
What jumped out the most to me was how, well, '90s this book felt. In some parts it looks like Lisa Frank puked all over it. The art, by Siobhan Keenan, is soft and reminiscent of early magical girl anime. Colorist Shan Murphy is generous with the pale pastels throughout the book, which really makes it totally glam. Cher, Dionne, and Tai are beautifully represented here, and each character retains there uniqueness from the original movie.
Writers Amber Benson and Sarah Kuhn have created an extended story from the original movie, and it works. I'm not sure how many times they both watched Clueless, but they nailed it. Each young woman is going through a difficult stage in their lives. For Cher, it's figuring out who she is. Dionne is trying to find the strength to be her own hero. Tai is learning how to be herself and a responsible adult after the death of a beloved relative.
There's plenty of second-hand embarrassment and humor, but there's a lot of heart. These characters are timeless and endearing, and Clueless: Senior Year really does a great job of filling the void left by a lack of more Clueless over all these years.
