Flex Mentallo: The Trade Paperback by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely
Grant Morrison: "It will happen."
Ian Sattler : "If anybody asks, we didn't say anything."
A DC editorial type once told me "Keep hold of your Flex Mentallo issues. It's the only way you'll ever get to read it".
The spinoff series from Doom Patrol, featured the muscular reality warper modelled after the Charles Atlas advertising, in a series that delved into the bizarre possibilities of superheroics, in a truly psychedelic tale by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. But a planned trade paperback of the series was stymied by a legal action by Charles Atlas Publishing against DC Comics, who even included the testimony of Jim Shooter in their case.
While Charles Atlas lost, DC Comics stated during testimony that they weren't going to publish any more Flex Mentallo. Which they stuck to.
Then more recently, DC Vertigo finally collected Doom Patrol into collections, including the issues that featured Flex – but not the mini-series. At one point, certain people at DC were talking about stealth-including those issues of Flex in the back of a Doom Patrol miniseries, but it was not to be. And right now a full set of all four issues gets $75 on eBay.
But now, at San Diego Comic Con, came the biggest indication that these comics would see collection and reprint after a question was asked from the audience. It's reprinted above. Could there be a chance, even, of something akin to the planned Absolute We3? It would certainly make for a good Vertigo Ressurected collection to follow The Extremist.
Of course, for the Italian audience, they must wonder what the fuss is all about. They've had a Flex Mentallo collection for years…
