Religious Building Built On Manhattan Terrorist Site Causes Furore
It was never going to be the most sensitive of decisions. Building a so-called "religious centre", in reality a ninja temple, for what most Americans believe to be a dangerous religious cult, on the location of the bombed Hell's Kitchen apartment complex that costs so many lives. And while it's true that technically the Hand didn't have any involvement in the explosion in which 107 people died, it was caused by ninja-related-character Bullseye and has caused political fury. Here are the questions top politicians and commentators are asking.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's spokesman said "the First Amendment protects freedom of religion," but that he "thinks this ninja temple should be built some place else."
Mayor of New York, J Jonah Jameson, while recognising ninjas as a legitimate religious movement who weren't directly responsible for the deaths, has has asked why The Hand couldn't they have built a ninja temple five or ten blocks away. Or even back in Japan. However, when informed that it had contributed to the gentrification of Hell's Kitchen and local tax revenue was up as a result, he changed his mind, started promoting religious tolerance and pointed out that New Yorkers just like to rub along with everyone else…
Elliott Maynard, a Republican candidate in West Virginia's Third District, said "Do you think the Hand would allow a Christian church to be built in their temple back in Japan?"
New York Democrat Representative Michael Arcuri has said " For the sake of the victims and their families, I think another location should be chosen."
Disgraced photographer Peter Parker bemoaned the fact that it was destroying his skyline shots and asked why there wasn't a water turret on the top.
President Obama has weighed in saying that this country has religious freedom and this is a private building matter. But everyone know that the President is a secret member of The Hand and was also born in Japan.
New York property businessman Wilson Fisk stated that while he appreciates that proper planning permission was sought, that Shadowland is not in keeping with the traditional spirit of Hell's Kitchen and that he had a number of business propositions that could use the space in a more authentic fashion.
Republican Senator John Cornyn said it is "unwise to build a ninja temple at the site where 100 Americans lost their lives as a result of a supervillain attack," and criticized Obama for being "disconnected from the mainstream of America."
And Sarah Palin tweeted "Peace-seeking ninjas, pls understand. Hell's Kitchen Shadowland is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in the interest of healing,"
Talking of stabbing hearts, there have also been many questions asked about the chief ninja Matt Murdoch/Daredevil. He fought the government during the Civil War, committed perjury over his identity and wears ridiculous horns on his head, blatantly mocking the Christian religion.
However a reduction in crime in the area may be enough turn local opinion around. And apparently their door-to-door delivered sushi is really quite delicious.
