Should The Comics Be R-Rated Too? Marvel Celebrates 25 Years Of Deadpool At C2E2
It's not a surprise that there was a panel celebrating Deadpool at C2E2. As one of the most well-known, fan-driven characters in the Marvel universe, and with the success of the movie, it just made sense.
A fine group of creators came together to present at the 25th Anniversary Deadpool panel and included: Deadpool co-creator Fabian Nicieza, Spider-Man/Deadpool artist Ed McGuinness, Uncanny Avengers artist Ryan Stegman, and Deadpool line editor Jordan D. White. The panel was moderated by Marvel Talent Scout Rickey Purdin.
Topics were scattered, and White serenaded the crowd with Deadpool's James Bond-style theme. Jokes were made about who was actually the first person to write the comic and Nicieza took the lead. However, he did point out that Daniel Way and now Gerry Duggan have written more with the character by now. Nicieza still holds the record for writing the most Cable issues.
It's been a topic of controversy around the internet about how the R-rated movie is going to impact the comic, and that question was asked during the panel.
Nicieza answered:
"The violence in the comics, if that were a film it would be rated R. That's the only difference. The conversation I've had with Jordan is that with Deadpool appearing in LEGO toys and on Disney XD, you see more and more kids coming up to you for Deadpool autographs. As a publisher, you gotta figure out how to handle the character."
The Q&A continued and of course the panel was asked why they love Deadpool:
White's answer is one we can all probably relate to…
"One of the things I love about Deadpool is his ability to tell meta-stories as well as stories. Breaking the fourth wall."
All in all, the discussion was lively and the group agreed that Deadpool is a character that is constantly evolving.
Nicieza concluded:
"…that means he can think he's one thing one week, then another week think he's something different. It's 100% true to how he feels at the moment. That means he can be anything anyone wants him to be."
We all look forward to seeing what the future holds for this highly entertaining character.
