There's Suddenly A Lot Of Anathema To Go Round At Marvel & DC Comics

The word "anathema" derives from the Ancient Greek, meaning "an offering" or "anything dedicated". In religious circles, that meant it was used for both objects consecrated to divine use and those dedicated to destruction, which included enemies and their weapons during religious wars. This led the word to be used for weapons dedicated to evil. Further on, Saint Paul used the word anathema to signify a curse and forced expulsion from the community of Christians. Five hundred years on, it was a formal ecclesiastical curse of excommunication and the condemnation of heretical doctrines. These days, it means something completely opposed to any sense of good taste, or what is acceptable. Or "ick". And this week, both Marvel and DC Comics are all over it.
Amazons Attack #3 features the Greek goddess Eris, also known as Strife, and was introduced in 2011 for the New 52 Wonder Woman from Brian Azzarello and Chris Chiang. And they give her a new name, that of Anathema. But DC Comics is not the only one doing that this week.
Sensational She-Hulk also has its third issue out tomorrow, and featured April Booth all hulked up, after Mark Brooks stole Hulk blood for her. And with a brand new name for her Hulkish identity. Looks like there's suddenly a lot of Anathema to go around right now…
