Today, There's Another Unauthorised Sequel to Watchmen Out, as Well as Doomsday Clock #11…

In 2009, I had the bright idea to write a parody of Watchmen. And found an artist in Simon Rohrmuller who could do a passable impersonation of Dave Gibbons. I wanted to write about the struggles between commerce and art, the role of lawyers and big media corporations, and the cyclical tale of the oppressed creator, and what happens when big movies come along. I got Watchmensch out of it. Published by Brain Scan Studios, it was ridiculously well reviewed for such an oddity, probably the most positive critical reception for anything I've done ever, including from my parents. Dave Gibbons went out of his way to pour praise on it. I sent a copy to Alan and never heard back. Probably for the best. But it's the thing that I am most asked to sign, even though there were only about two thousand copies printed.

Seven years later, the CEO of Heavy Metal Magazine told me he wanted to republish Watchmensch as one story in a new comics anthology magazine, Soft Wood. Oh and he wanted to the original colourist of Watchmen, John Higgins to colour it. Which he did. Simon freaked out when I told him.

And today it's on the comic book stands. And now, as it is confirmed that Soft Wood will continue as a bimonthly comedy anthology comic book, I have to confess I've started thinking of a sequel.

Doomsday Cock perhaps? About The Batman Who Streaks unable to expose himself on panel, even though this guy wandering around naked in blue gets to do it without interference? I wonder if Simon can do a good Gary Frank as well.

Here's a little look at the coloured Watchmensch and some of its friends in Soft Wood
