Tim Seeley's Writer's Commentary on Hack/Slash Vs Chaos #1, out now from Dynamite.

Page 1: This is me returning to Hack/Slash form by making fun of something I hate. In this case, Youtube "personalities!"  I have to say, I've been off H/S for 4 years, and man did it feel good to stick it to some Logan Paul looking douchebag. Anyway, this is also our modern slasher movie intro. Every slasher movie since the dawn of time makes sure to tell you they know what the kids are into so we continue that fine tradition.

Page 2: It's interesting for me to work with Rapha, and his art style is vastly different than the kind I usually end up writing for. He's got this cleaner "Eduardo Risso" style, which is perfectly suited for quiet, shadowy moments. So, instead of course I gave him a big, loud fight scene to start out with. Hell of a SPLOOTCH sound effect there by Crank, a letterer who has worked on more issues of Hack/Slash than even me. Don't know what I'd do without the guy.

Page 3: And this is where we tie this series to the OG Hack/Slash series. We've got Father Wrath 2 and D1ab0l1q (one of whom debuted in another crossover, this time with Suicide Girls! Don't tell your mom.)

Page 4: EVIL ERNIE! I bought the first issue of Evil Ernie off the shelf at Gateway Comics in Wausau, Wisconsin. It was black and white and gritty, and it felt like something you weren't supposed to have. So, of course, I loved it. As always, anytime I work on Chaos!, it's with love for the worlds created by Brian Pulido and Steven Hughes. Also, Smiley is great, because his dialogue is fun to write, and his abilities are pretty undefined since he's essentially a cartoon.

Page 5: Pretty solid Ernie grins by Rapha here. Ernie is a really hard character to draw (and I would know since I've drawn a bunch of his series' covers) and there's always the possibility he'll look like a caricature. Fortunately, metalheads have never really gone away, so he's still pretty fresh. Also, here's where we're reminded that Ernie and Vlad have met before and that they aren't buddies.

Page 6: The challenge here was dealing with some continuity. Technically, Ernie's been rebooted since he crossed-over with Cassie. Maybe twice even. Cassie has not. So, I had to dance between the raindrops and make their previous meeting work with the current Ernie. Ah, the joy of comics.

Page 7: The trick with this stuff is trying to lay out enough back information for new readers, without making old time readers bored. Trust me, it's a lot f*cking harder than it should be. I decided to tear the band-aid off, and get everything out in the open, while giving us some fight-tension.

Page 8: Artistically, I think this is my fave page of issue 1. It's our tie back to the original Ernie/Cassie interaction where they bonded via Ernie's telepathic powers. Nice composition by Rapha that gets tied together nicely by Dee's colors. This would be a good time to tell you to read the original H/S vs. Ernie crossover, available in H/S Omnibus volume 1.

Page 9: Okay, I know these commentaries are usually very positive, but I'm kind of anal, so I'll tell you how I f*cked this one up. That last panel was intended to be shown from the rear.. Big Vlad hesitating before joining them, Vlad's slumped shoulders indicating his reticence. But, I guess I didn't emphasize it enough because Rapha focused on the truck, which, while a nice composition, doesn't tell the story as I intended. So, lesson learned…be real damn clear in panel descriptions.

Page 10: Rapha, Dee  and Crank killed it on the storytelling here. If you've read my stuff before you know I LOVE these comic panel grid pages that utilize timing and repetition. This one tells a lot of story in a limited space…Vlad is suspicious, Ernie is oblivious, Cassie is willing to give in a lot earlier than Vlad is…good sh*t. Give us our f*cking Eisner.

Page 11: There's some cool panel composition going on here by Rapha. Panel 3 is nicely framed by the truck frame. And then, we get the debut of my second favorite CHAOS! character, Chastity: Vampire Assassin.

Page 12: I've been a sucker for The Chosen (who starred in a comic called The Omen. Yeah, it's confusing) since they first debuted in the '90s. They're basically 'horror X-Men' and there is just nothing wrong with that idea. I don't think they were ever the most recognized or beloved Chaos! characters but when I work on Chaos! you'll see The Chosen.

Page 13: Fight! Who needs words?

Page 14: This is the sh*t I love about Chaos! Beneath the gore and the boobs, there's a mythology rooted in Nordic legend. I always thought Brian's intent for Chaos! was "Jack Kirby by way of Night of the Living Dead." Anyway, you can see that I can't resist digging into that stuff. "Again-walkers and Jotnar!"  Glorious.

Page 15: This is the part in the crossover where you have to explain why someone trusts anyone enough to team up…a story conceit that's been battled by everyone who has ever jammed two universe together. Voodoo Childe is another favorite of mine, and I always try to give her some cool stuff to do in these stories.

Page 16: Yeah, Cassie and Vlad got high. I figured it was a bit of character development, recognizing that they've grown and aged since there first debuted 14 years ago. They're more relaxed with themselves now…less inclined to fear losing control. Also, we reference the Hack/Slash meetings with Vampirella here.

Page 17: Like I said, I dig Voodoo Childe. I like how Dee connected the loas to her eyes via key color.

Page 18: I'm a child of the '80s, a time when every story involved some f*cking "magic sword," from Masters of the Universe to Star Wars to Thundercats to The Sword and the Sorceress. I've been waiting to do one in Hack/Slash for a good decade or more, so here it is: DRAUGSPLITTER. That sh*t is metal as hell.

Page 19: Really like that second panel. Quiet. Powerful. Shadowy. Like I said, that's what Rapha is best suited for, and he proves it.

Page 20: Chaos' very own Lucifer makes his muscled debut, along with Cremator. I like that Dee's colors drastically change from cool blues to a hot red tone for this scene.

Page 21: And there's my first favorite Chaos! character…Purgatori. The scenes I thought of first for this story were the ones we'll see next issue between Purgatori and Cassie, two ladies who would definitely not enjoy each other's company. A critique of myself on this page…I should have added just a little more info about Purgi here…"demon vampiress. Slayer of gods. Absolute bitch." Pretend it's there, would you?
