Survival Is Harsh As Hell In 'Symmetry' At PAX West
A game that caught my eye and made me shiver to the bone at PAX West was Symmetry, another game from the Indie Games Polska booth. The demo I got to play puts you on what is essentially a barren planet with little to no resources around for any kind of help. It is up to you to level up your characters by teaching them new skills, finding what little materials are around, and helping them survive until they can get off whatever desolate rock you've found them on.
Symmetry employs a learning mechanic that will teach your players to do certain tasks, which they can utilize to get things done. But the biggest annoyance in the demo was keeping them alive. Throughout the demo I had to deal with them needing rest and food, as well as not being able to do certain things like make new food or produce energy for the building they sought shelter in. The game itself resembled a simulator version of The Martian, only with the passage of time being far more annoying and the need to get stuff done much more urgent. It was an intriguing build that I'd like to see a full version of, but we'll have to wait until later this year to see a finished product.
