ABC Puts Down Downward Dog After One Season
The canine-centered sitcom Downward Dog has been sent to live on a farm by ABC. The series the focused on a moody dog named Martin and his owner played by Allison Tolman (Fargo). Martin speaks to the audience in voice over… except it hasn't spoken to network execs who have pulled the plug. This move was surprising to many, including co-creator, writer and voice of Martin Samm Hodges who confirmed the cancellation and says they will try to find a new home for the comedy.
It is a bit of a surprise in that the show had decent ratings in its debut coming off of the season finale of Modern Family. The show had 4.7 million viewers and a 1.1 demo rating along with a lot of positive reviews. The following week it held firm with 5.7 million viewers and a 1.0 demo rating but began to fade with the last week being 3.1 million viewers and a 0.6 rating.
ABC will air the final two episodes on June 27th at 10 pm.
Here is the statement from Hodges and co-creator, writer, director Michael Killen.
