Argylle: Matthew Vaughn Has Two Sequels In Mind

Director Matthew Vaughn has two more sequels in mind if Argylle does well when it is released in theaters next month.

Article Summary

  • Matthew Vaughn has plans for two Argylle sequels, hoping fans want more.
  • Second film to explore Argylle's origins; Henry Cavill excited for lead role.
  • Vaughn emphasizes supporting original films for a thriving cinema culture.
  • Argylle boasts a stellar cast and brings a fresh spy thriller this February.

It's a well-known fact in Hollywood that nearly everything is pitched as a trilogy because that is the ideal thing that studios want. This can be a bad thing if a writer puts the cart before the horse, doesn't make a good film for the first entry, and fills it with nothing but "wait and see" for the next movie. No one goes to see it, and then the second film never happens. Argylle is one of the rare bigger-budget original films coming out in a year filled with many franchise films. That doesn't mean it will be exempt from the trilogy thing, and writer and director Matthew Vaughn isn't being shy about it. He recently broke down the next two films to Total Film without giving too many details.

"Book one is about: how did Argylle become a spy? That will be the next film. And then Argylle 2 is – I don't want to give it all away, but there's the young Argylle, and that becomes Henry [Cavill] because Henry loves the idea of doing a proper Argylle movie as well."

However, Vaughn isn't exactly new to this game and knows that we're all going to have the same conversation we always have once the movie schedule starts to fill out with franchise fills. There will be a bunch of people complaining that no one makes original films, and then when you ask them the last time they went to a theater and saw an original movie or purchased one on VOD, they'll look at you like you're insane. Argylle might have studio backing, but Vaughn knows that you have to get people in theaters, or hypothetical sequels will just be that, hypothetical. "Everybody complains there's not enough original stuff, but it's because they don't go see it," says Vaughn. "People have got to buy tickets first, or there won't be fucking anything." So if this film seems like something you'll be interested in, check it out when it comes out next month, because if it does well, there could be more down the line.

Argylle: Summary, Cast List, Release Date

The greater the spy, the bigger the lie. From the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman franchise, Kick-Ass) comes Argylle, a razor-witted, reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller.

Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World franchise) is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly's fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.

Accompanied by Aiden (Oscar® winner Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly's fictional world and her real one begins to blur.

The top-flight ensemble cast features Henry Cavill (The Witcher), John Cena (Fast X), Oscar® winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), Grammy-winning pop superstar Dua Lipa (Barbie), Emmy winner and Oscar® nominee Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Emmy winner and comedy icon Catherine O'Hara (Schitt's Creek), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), and the legendary Samuel L. Jackson. Alfie is played by Chip, the real-life cat of supermodel Claudia Vaughn (née Schiffer).

Argylle is directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs (I Still See You). The film is produced by Matthew Vaughn, Adam Bohling (Kingsman franchise), Jason Fuchs, and David Reid (Kingsman franchise). The executive producers are Adam Fishbach, Zygi Kamasa, Carlos Peres, and Claudia Vaughn. It will be released on February 2, 2024.
